One killed as security forces recover firearms, stolen livestock in Isiolo

Fierce gunfire between a multi-agency Security team and suspected bandits in Isiolo has left one civilian dead.

The security forces, involved in the ongoing Operation Maliza Uhalifu, on Tuesday recovered two illegal firearms and 19 stolen livestock from the bandits. The livestock had been taken from the Kiwanja area.

The operation is part of a broader government initiative that has been targeting dangerous and disturbed areas, including Isiolo, as part of efforts to restore peace and tackle banditry.

The government's ongoing campaign has seen significant progress in addressing insecurity in counties like Turkana, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, West Pokot, Samburu, Laikipia, Meru, and Isiolo.

Isiolo Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner, Patrick Musango, had previously raised concerns about the proliferation of illegal firearms in the region.

He appealed to residents in Isiolo to surrender any illegal firearms they might be holding. "Residents have no reason to own a gun because the government has enough weapons to protect citizens and their properties," Musango said.

He also noted that those who refuse to comply risk forceful disarmament.

In response to the growing threat of armed bandits, the Ministry of Interior has issued stern directives to security agencies to deal ruthlessly with bandits and cattle rustlers.

"Police officers should use the firearms in their possession to protect Kenyans and themselves, ensuring that criminals are neutralized before they harm anyone," the ministry stated.

The government has been ramping up efforts to combat banditry in the region.

In addition to deploying drones for surveillance, armoured vehicles and other modern security equipment are being provided to support law enforcement in their efforts to counter criminals armed with sophisticated weapons.
